Almost eight years ago, the case of ‘Nirbhaya’, a 23-year-old woman who was sexually assaulted by 6 men on a public bus shook the whole Indian population and drew the world’s attention towards the rape culture prevailing in India.
The physiotherapy student was on her way back home from the movies with a male friend when the bus driver and five other men took turns to rape her while touring the city, even using an iron rod to violate her intimates. Her partner tried to intervene but was savagely beaten. After accomplishing their sexual drives, they tossed the victims on the side of the road.
The woman suffered deep injuries to an extent that some of her internal organs had to be removed. Ultimately she passed away two weeks after in a hospital in Singapore.
For months, thousands of men and women around the country took to the street to seek justice for the victim.
After more than seven years, the court has taken the decision to hang the four accused. The fifth man committed suicide back in 2013 and the sixth was a minor and was released after three years of imprisonment. The hanging will take place on January 22 at 7 a.m. in Tihar Jail.
The victim’s mother broke into tears after the court’s judgement and said « My daughter has finally got justice ». According to her lawyer, this decision will serve as an example for similar cases in the future.
